Cataracts
Presbyopia cataract refers to a disease in which the transparent lens in our eye, which works like a camera lens inside the eye, becomes cloudy and murky, making it difficult for light to pass through the eye. Thus, the image projected onto the retina becomes unclear and vision ultimately deteriorates.
Cataract eye
Normal eye
Causes of cataracts
Congenital cataracts
In most cases, the cause is unknown. In some patients, cataracts are accompanied by systemic diseases such as genetic defects, infection during pregnancy, congenital metabolic disorders, or chromosomal abnormalities. If start suffering from severe cataracts from a young age, we recommend having surgery as soon as possible since cataracts can easily lead to amblyopia caused by the impaired development of your vision.
Genetic
Chromosomal abnormalities(Down syndrome, etc.)
congenital metabolic disorder
Intrauterine infection (mother's drug use or infection)
Late-onset cataracts
Occurs after cataract surgery and refers to clouding occurring in the capsular bag where the artificial lens was inserted. Deteriorating vision can be restored with a simple laser treatment at an outpatient clinic.
Aging
Eye trauma
Diabetes
Medication(steroids, antidepressants)
Intraocular disease (uveitis, retinal dystrophy)
"Ultraviolet X-ray Malnutrition"
Cataract symptoms
Cloudy eyes
Phenomenon where a white foreign body appears in the pupils
Deteriorating vision
Overall vision is not clear and objects appear blurry.
Double vision
Objects appear to overlap into 2~3 pieces
Light scattering
Light appears scattered under bright sources of light such as street lamps or fluorescent lamps.
Cataract onset is growing faster with patients starting to suffer symptoms as early as in their 40s and 50s
It is known that the age at which symptoms of presbyopia appear is around the mid to late 40s. Recently, however, the rapid penetration of electronic devices such as smartphones and laptops has pushed up the age at which geriatric eye diseases such as presbyopia and cataracts begin, which is why added caution is required.
